We have covered Wifi sniffing T-Shirts, Sneakers and bags for a while and my biological radar is always going off when I see a new clothing or bag item that offers a Wifi network indicating feature.

Wifi signal indication and knowing the Wifi signal strength is almost as knowing there is breathable air around – which is nowadays not the case anymore everywhere that’s why air quality indicating clothing comes right after Wifi indicating clothing and bags.

It’s pure convenience to have such indication integrated on items we use all day almost all times especially when outside. there is no need to fire up the portable devices which cost a lot of limited battery power to find out there is no Wifi or a very weak signal.

Soyntec, a company dedicated to the Laptop Lifestyle is offering a range of WIFFINDER™ bags in various sizes, Retailing for around $360.- each.

Each style features an integrated Wifi indicator combined with a clock in a nice looking decal like style element of the face of the bag.

Jenny Chowdhury a resident researcher focusing on wearable and physical computing at NYU/ITP created a range of 802.11 (WiFi) Apparel by taking out the ‘geeky’ look of other WiFi shirts we have posted about.

Her approach is to combine traditional floral pattern used for a long time to decorate clothing with the technology from the synthetic environment of today.

WiFi – or 802.11 in tech speak – is becoming more and more ubiquitous as almost all portable devices using WiFi as communication function. Those radio waves, although present around us, are invisible.

WiFi Finder devices are used to check if the WiFi signal strength is sufficient to use our devices. But as Jenny demonstrates the is more potential into the WiFi detecting technology than being just a cold, hard plastic box.

WiFi detecting technology can be used to add a new style dimension to our clothing, to interact with our environment by changing colors, visualizing the vibrancy of our lifeline (WiFi) to the cyber world (online presents).

The Wifi Jacket is the first of a range of WiFi apparels ‘literally “bring to light” a portion of the invisible radio waves by illuminating five stripes in accordance with the wifi signal strength.’

The basis for Jenny’s 802.11 Apparel is a hacked WiFi detector, some LEDs and an Arduino micro-controller.

Now you decide which WiFi indicator is more appealing: the plastic-box-shaped WiFi-Finder devices or Jenny’s Wifi-Jacket?

Flashwear keeps on extending their animated T-Shirts and offers now many different styles of their WiFi detecting T-Shirt collection ensuring there will be one style that suits you.

These Tee’s are the perfect little gizmo when it comes to find a WiFi signal. Checking for a WiFi signal with a T-Shirt makes more fun than switching on your notebook or WiFi signal sniffer.

You can also show your social responsibility the all other net-citizen around you which will appreciate your signal broadcast on your chest.

The Tee displays the strength of 802.11b & 802.11g signals. The electronic part is integrated into a small battery pack which holds also the 3x AAA batteries required to light up your chest/T-Shirt. The decal is removable to allow the cleaning of the Tee.

Flashwear sells the WiFi detector T-Shirts for $ 47.48 directly via their online store.

Get your Dad something sensible this year. Believe me, he has already enough socks and ties

We have seen T-Shirts that sniff out Wi-Fi signals and show them on the chest. Although this might be too much geek for some it does have appeal to others (I may count myself to the ‘others’ category).

There is the other option of a more discrete Wi-Fi sniffing integrated in bags as alternative to taking out the computer only to check if a useful and strong enough signal is available.

And now we have the Wi-Fi sniffing sneaker like this upgraded Nike Dunk which is pushing the fashion boundaries very far. Never mind the style of the Nike’s, this concept sneaker has been done in 2006 so they are out of fashion by now.

The remaining question still is: does such a concept appeal to some? To anyone? Or is this creative work just demonstrating what could be done?

If a shoe would record my daily walking jogging or running profile and upload via Wi-Fi to my online tracking system, I could see the point.

If a Wi-Fi sneaker could interact with a computer game a la Wii, I do see the point for having one.

To be fair, I like the integration of the Wi-Fi indication in the sneaker. Neatly done without changing the shoes wearability nor disturbing its appearances.

The designer Stefan Dukaczewik calls his concept sneaker ASRD – ‘A Step in the Right Direction’. The ASRD sneaker is equipped with an integrated 802.11 detection unit embedded under the flap of the left shoe.

Once the pressure sensitive insole is activated, the unit scans the surrounding area for Wi-Fi signals and displays the result through LEDs.

The three LEDs on the flap enclosure represent the signal strength of any Wi-Fi signal within a 50 meter area. A blinking LED represents no signal, while a lighting LED shows that there is a signal present.

If one day those Wi-Fi sneakers become available make sure you keep them clean and avoid muddy streets or you won’t see the signal indication

Too late for my Valentines gift but anyway, this über-hip-cool tee might not be my first choice for a Valentines gift after all – they don’t have it in red.

I do want to have the Wifi indicator T-Shirt of course. What better way is there to show I am completely connected, always on(line) and addicted to WiFi radiation.

If you are more concerned of possible, but not proven, negative health effects of radiation, you might still want to have the Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt. Why? It shows you if you are in a highly radiating area. Just keep on walking until no bar shows on your T-Shirt. Pretty smart idea

Whatever reason or motivation you need to pick up the WiFi T-Shirt, it’s ready to ship, costs just £19.95 (US$38.90) and can be ordered directly by Firebox.com

Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt’s are not new on the block but they do get a bit better looking all time. Our last introduction of Thinkgeek’s Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt was already a good looking T-Shirt, yeah, it is a bit geeky to wear them but hey – life should be fun as well.

You get always people talking with you when wearing such shirt, it’s not something everyone has and animated T-Shirts are an eye catcher.

Explaining that behind the animation is actually a ‘deeper meaning’ makes it even more interesting to others.

In case you want to have the convenient WiFi sniffing without reaching for your laptop, you have the option and go for one of those WiFi detecting bags we recently posted about.

The Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt sniffs out the wireless signals working in the 802.11b or 802.11g range and shows them in bar form in an stylized laptop image on the front of the T-Shirt.

Nice idea that combines form and function.

The Wi-Fi Detecting T-Shirt will be available for just £20.- ($39.-) from the end of January by firebox.com

Finding a usable WiFi signal is becoming an everyday routine for many of the ‘always connected’ net-citizen. Knowing if you are in a so called ‘hot spot’ means taking out your Laptop and check if the signal is good enough for a quick surf on the net.

Luckily there are more convenient ways to make the hot-spot check. For one, you could go for the WiFi T-Shirt or buy one of the newly launched Wiffinder™ bags from Soyntec®

Soyntec® a Spanish company focusing on digital consumer electronics and computer peripherals and bringing together state-of-the art technologies with amazing designs, has started to launch a range of bags that have a WiFi sniffer integrated.

Integrating is a smart idea, no need to clutter your key ring or bag with yet another item and no danger that you loose the little WiFi checker that is, as long as you don’t loose your entire bag which is less likely than a small WiFi detector unit.

The integrated WiFi signal detector works with 2.4G, 802.11b/802.11g networks and has as additional bonus a clock. Press a button and the detector will lock around for a signal gives the strength of the signal.

Powered is the detector by 2x CR2032 Lithium Batteries. The detector is only active for a few seconds when the button is pressed, just long enough to look for a signal and show it’s strength. I guess the batteries will last for quite some time.

Soyntec® has four models in their program: the Urban Bag, Executive Case Bag, University Backpack and Trolley Suitcase (from left to right).

The Urban Bag (my personal favorite for it’s good look) and the University Backpack are available now for $ 63.30 each. The other two models will become available on February 11.

All bags are made of Nylon high density material and fits laptops up to 15.4″ (17” for the Trolley Suitcase).

A great idea packed in a stylish design, this WiFi detector is less geeky and more discrete yet sophisticated than the WiFi T-Shirt which is more for the fun loving net-citizen.

Check out Soyntec’s online store for more details.
