A few month ago I was lamenting suggesting why brands/retailer do not pick up one of the design inspirations that have shown up for many years, DIY enthusiasts and designer that hacked their remote controller and give it a soft touch.

Brookstone has made the thinking-out-of-the-box step into a soft electronic future with the launch of a Remote Control Pillow stuffed with a universal 6-in-1 remote control which is able to talk to over 500 devices.

Finally you can hug your remote, you can sleep on it and best of all, it will be really very hard to miss place this remote controller.

The R/C pillow has a power-saving auto shut-off feature which puts the the remote functions into deep sleep after 60 seconds of inactivity.

The remote control pillow retails for $29.95 at Brookstone.

The Alarm Pillow design from Korean Designer Seung Jun Jeong takes a simple idea and wraps it into a gorgeous looking object.

Pillows are, next to our clothing one of the most used intimidate products we have a lot of skin contact and we enjoy using.

Enhancing these objects with sensible functionality, combining soft materials with ‘hardware-made-soft’ leads to designs like the Alarm Pillow which starts vibrating at a pre-set time, just like an alarm clock.

The background of this design study: couples that sleep in the same room/bed have the problem that one has to go up earlier than the other. Using an alarm clock that starts ringing or play an good morning song wakes up the partner who actually could still be in dreamland.

Vibrations coming from a pillow will definitely not wake up anyone around but very certainly wake up the person who’s head is resting on the pillow.

Simple idea, real world suffrage of many plus a nice integration, such pillow would be on my dream wish list.

Besides the vibration function I like the setting of the pillow alarm: pulling on a ribbon at the side of the pillow which has numbers on it is suggested as timer setting – cool. No dial to turn, no keying in of the time, just pull the ribbon until the desired wake-up time appears.

A dream idea, unfortunately at this moment an idea only but let’s be optimistic that this Alarm Pillow will make it to the sales floor sooner than later.

Remote Controls used in our homes are the counterpoint of our attention, who is not handling them on a frequent daily basis.

Considering the importance we assign to the remote controls I am surprised how little attention they got over the past many years from designers.

Our RCs look today, besides some slight variations of shape and color, like they looked in the stone age of technology.

Why not giving them a make over like Didier Hilhorst and Nicholas Zambetti at Droog Design did in 2007?

The designer duo created the Cushion Control, pillows that function as remote control for TV or any other stuff we sue to control in our electronic portfolio at home.

The idea is fabulous, using cushions that are often place for decoration on a couch or in our bedroom. The Cushion Control gives an added functionality in a playful way and as the designers anticipated in this concept design to ‘transform the fights over “who has the remote” into playful cushion fights’.

Each cushion has only one function like volume, channel flipping or on/off.

Cushion Control was created for Dry Tech III, the third collaboration between Droog Design and the Structures and Materials Lab at TU Delft, which focused on advanced materials and manufacturing processes as an inspiration for design.

Unfortunately this cute remote control design did not make it into a commercial product up to now, maybe humanity is not yet ready for a make-over of our work-donkey-style R/C we grew up with.

MIT‘s Ambient Intelligence Group members Sajid Sadi and Pattie Maes in collaboration with Amir Mikhak created the Relational Pillow which is adding an interactive, relation enhancing dimension to a pillow.

The Relational Pillow is fitted with light and touch sensors, along with a Wi-Fi connection allowing to send emotions given to the pillow to someone far away.

The touch sensors let you literally draw a smile with your fingers on one Pillow and send it to another Relational Pillow. The information on one Pillow is transmitted to another, simply using the lights inside.

The Pillow acts as a pictorial communication channel between two people, perhaps between long-distance friends or couples.

Unfortunately the Relational Pillow like many other interactive pillows, is just a concept design and I am still waiting for a first commercially available product as this form of interactivity of a pillow would be much more appealing for me to have one around my couch unlike those ‘at every cost’ cute looking but static pillows.

Fitting pillows with technology goes back to 2001 as far as I could find out when Annie Lovejoy made an ‘exploration of emergent and redundant technologies, the proliferation of components / hardware and data which is intricately embroidered in a tapestry of systems’ resulting in the first interactive pillow concept.

Since then we have seen pillows that talk, pillows that play music and many variants of light up pillows creating atmosphere in our homes.

The interactive pillow developed by the Interactive Institute (Sweden) in 2005 proposes a pillow to be used as communication of feelings between people separated over long distances.

Pillows, especially the ones decorating our living room are cuddled and hugged to calm down, protect while thinking about someone special. Most of the time we are not even aware of this but I can ensure you it is the case.

Using a intimidate object as the pillow represents for communicating feelings to loved-ones or significant others living far away, family members living abroad or just out of town is an sensible and creative idea.

The pillows are connected via a internet based communication platform. When one pillow is being cuddled and hugged the gestures will be translated into glowing light pattern and transmitted to the other pillow far away. The receiver will so see the beloved one is thinking and feeling about one right now, sending a warm, sensible ‘hello’ to the other.

The pillow illumination comes from invisible to the naked eye, electroluminescent wires woven directly into the textile pattern of each pillow.

Considering the advancement of WiFi in our homes over the past 3 years, this interactive communication pillow, as proposed by the Interactive Institute, could be a nice enrichment for our home decoration and in staying in contact with our loved-ones.

The pillow itself tells the bedtime story ‘relieving’ you when absolutely needed as you have to finish a project on time from the story telling for your little one.

Pling Plong is a media player integrated into a pillow shape for story telling and sounds. It is designed to stimulate children´s imagination and interest for books.

The Pling Plong pillow is a design concept but if you are interested to get such pillow you can check out Silje’s blog where she documented the creation of the Pling Plong pillow and similar pillow concepts targeted towards children’s imagination power which the grown ups have lost over the years.

It dosen’t have to be always high-tech to create magic and I am sure the Pling Plong pillow will be the next best thing after Mom and Dad for story telling.
