During our restless search for new Interactive Clothing we found another iPod enabled outdoor jacket with textile controls, the RHYTM iPod jacket for men.

You might say ‘a bit late for a snowboarding jacket’ and I agree to this. We are spending most of our blogging time searching on the Internet for new products out of the Wearable Electronic department.

Zegna announced in June last year the introduction of the Solar-JKT as part of the Zegna Sport range for Spring/summer 2008.

We still have Winter time but Zegna started selling the Solar-JKT in their shops in Hong Kong for around $ 1,050.- Not a bargain but Zegna is all about quality, style and innovation and not price.

The key innovation of the Solar-JKT is of course the integrated or let’s be more precise - attached - solar panel collar. According Zegna’s description, spending one hour in the sun gives for example power for 35 minutes talk-time on a cellphone, not too bad. Staying in the sun the whole day, you could talk forever.

The solar panel collar can be removed and used as separate solar charger at times the sun is too powerful to justify wearing a jacket.

iPod, PDA, cellphone are charged from the jackets battery via USB connector or with the adaptors included in the jacket for Nokia, Sony Ericsson, Motorola or Blackberry.

We have not found any online shop yet that has the Solar-JKT on offer so for the time being you have to make a shopping trip to Hong Kong to pick up the power jacket.

Having seen the Solar-JKT, I am not sure if the use of solar panels in the collar is the best place on a jacket to collect solar energy. They are small and it will be difficult to have both panels fully exposed to the sun while wearing the jacket.

Well, at least Zegna delivers in time what they announced back in June last year and there is always hope for an improved version for next season.

Top rapper Kanye West collected four Grammy wins Sunday night during the Grammy Awards in LA.

The most striking (for our blog) is the stage outfit Kanye was sporting, a jacket with animated light effects on each side of the front.

I do love Kanye’s music and I do love the fact that Wearable Electronic is taking the stage again after the performance of OK Go last November.

OK Go’s interactive fashion designer was Moritz Waldemeyer but I couldn’t find out (yet) where Kanye West is ordering his stage outfit.

Guessing a bit and looking at the photos and the video (see below) as well as some hints mentioned on MTV, those displays are partly based on EL-wires (the horizontal lines) and on LED matrices that flash in the rhythm to a synthesizer.

Wearing a jacket with flashing LED lights and light-up shades, Kanye electrified ( literally) the show with a flashing post-apocalyptic take on “Stronger”. A perfect match of acoustical and visual effects.

For Kanye West fans among our readers: West’s album snagged an award for best rap album and picking up wins for best solo performance, best rap song and best rap performance by a duo or group for his collaboration with Common.

Kanye loves glowing stuff as he writes on his blog ‘I’m posting anything that glows’ and he for sure does love his cool jacket as he was wearing it fully animated while picking up the prize for Best Rap Album.

Once again, Wearable Electronic takes the center stage.

Mountain sports outfitter VAUDE from Germany shows at the ispo winter 2008 an interesting concept they developed for high end Outdoor Jackets, the Hybrid Performance System of its new Argon Line.

The Argon line is the most performance enhancing clothing concept for alpinists: all layers are perfectly fine-tuned to each other to reach the highest level of breathability, comfort and efficiency possible.

But there is a special feature that makes this performance system into our blog coverage: the use of Energlo fabrics, a glow-in-the-dark waterproof, breathable fabric.

VAUDE’s Energlo Jacket doesn’t just reflect light thanks to Energlo, it provides active protection in the darkness. A large fluorescent zone on the front and back of the jacket absorbs light from the sun or artificial lighting during the day, and shines in the dark for up to 180 minutes.

This fluorescence is created by minerals that are processed into the fabric so they aren’t affected by washing. Additional reflective elements complement these zones, providing all-round safety and guaranteeing wearing fun.

“The individual components are fully integrated with each other to create a complete system,“ explains Johan Raiha, Product Manager of the Argon Line.

The use of Energlo is smart and practical; catch the light during the day to have it ready for the late afternoon/early evening and stay visible. Especially useful in winter where the daylight is short.

I wonder why this concept hasn’t made it to the innovation award list. On my scale of innovative clothing the Energlo Jacket is very high up.
